NiSource Inc., an energy holding company, through its subsidiaries, provides natural gas, electricity, and other products and services. It operates in three segments: Gas Distribution Operations, Gas Transmission and Storage Operations, and Electric Operations.

The Gas Distribution Operations segment provides natural gas service and transportation to residential, commercial, and industrial customers. As of December 31, 2010, it owned and operated a total of 58,608 miles of pipelines and certain related facilities. This segment serves approximately 3.3 million customers in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kentucky, Maryland, Indiana, and Massachusetts.

The Gas Transmission and Storage Operations segment offers gas transportation and storage services for local distribution companies, marketers, and industrial and commercial customers located in northeastern, mid-Atlantic, Midwestern, and southern states, as well as in the District of Columbia. As of the above date, it owned and operated 14,772 miles of interstate natural gas transmission pipelines.

This segment also operates underground natural gas storage systems capable of storing approximately 639 billion cubic feet of natural gas. The Electric Operations segment generates, transmits, and distributes electricity; and engages in wholesale and transmission transactions. I

t served approximately 458 thousand customers in the northern part of Indiana; and operated 3 coal-fired electric generating stations with a net capability of 2,574 megawatt (mw), 4 gas-fired generating units with a net capability of 203 mw, and 2 hydroelectric generating plants with a net capability of 10 mw, as well as a combined cycle gas turbine plant, Sugar Creek, with a 535 mw capacity.

The company was formerly known as NIPSCO Industries, Inc. and changed its name to NiSource Inc. in April 1999. NiSource Inc. was founded in 1912 and is headquartered in Merrillville, Indiana.
